HEO completed a unit on concrete. Students learned the history of concrete, basic mixing, chemical reactions during the curing process, form construction, mixing, placing, and finishing concrete. Their final project was to design and build a concrete bench for the shop.

Royce and Tony, two talented Culinary Arts seniors from Gorham High School, recently showcased their skills as part of their senior project, which included designing, preparing, and serving a full menu at the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary Club luncheon.

Each student brought their own creativity and passion to the table. Royce crafted a menu inspired by the bold and iconic flavors of New York street food, while Tony designed a spicy, vibrant Haitian-inspired menu. Both menus were thoughtfully planned and beautifully executed, highlighting the incredible talent of these chefs in training.

As part of this special experience, students were encouraged to invite a few important people in their lives to attend the luncheon. Royce and Tony welcomed several Gorham High School staff members and family, making the event not only a professional milestone but also a meaningful personal celebration.

We are so proud of Royce and Tony for their hard work, creativity, and dedication.

The Automotive Technology Level II students at WRVC took their Maine State Inspection Exam today. This comprehensive assessment includes three components: the Administrative exam, Class A (domestic vehicles 26,000 lbs. and under), and the Class E (Emissions) exam.

We are proud to share that all 10 students successfully passed, an outstanding accomplishment that reflects their dedication and skill. We also extend our sincere thanks to our Automotive Technology instructors for their commitment and hard work in preparing students for this important milestone.

The Medical Occupations Tech I students are learning about male and female reproductive systems, and to make learning about this more real, they're doing a simulation of pregnancy at this time.

This Pregnancy Simulation has students navigating the hallways and mastering daily tasks with a "baby bump." Our students are getting a hands-on lesson in the physical demands and physiological changes of pregnancy. It also promotes empathy and understanding of the physical strain patients face. It’s all fun and games until you have to tie your shoes! 👟😅 Great job to our future healthcare pros for participating in this challenge!

Please see this wonderful message from Superintendent, Dr. Lancia!

Congratulations to WRVC student Riley D. and our own WHS cook and School Nutrition Administrative Assistant, Kelly Bourgeois, who won the Southern Maine School Nutrition Cook-Off on Friday, representing Westbrook as team Blue Blazes. They have now been invited to attend the State of Maine Cook-off on April 8th in Bangor. We had some wonderful feedback from the judges of the cook-off (including the School Nutrition Director in Gorham, a chef from RSU 14, and Eric S., a 6th Grade Student at Westbrook Middle School), as well as the staff of the Department of Education Child Nutrition Office.

On Friday, the Portland Fire Department visited our Firefighting program with their ladder truck, giving our students an unforgettable hands-on experience, including the opportunity to go up on the fire ladder!

Several members of the Portland team also finished cutting the utility poles used to stabilize our mock house, which we use for hose drill and other trainings.

A huge thank you to these incredible professionals for their time, generosity, and continued partnership. We are so grateful for the real-world learning opportunities they provide our students! ❤️🔥

Huge thank you to SGT Patrick O'Brien, SSG Nicholas Daigle, SFC Nickolas Haskell, and SGT Davion Jackson from the Maine Army National Guard for coming into our Medical Occupations program today to provide combat medic demonstrations and inform our students about the vast opportunities available through the health care field. It was very informative, hands-on, and fun!

Employers emphasize the importance of showing up as a critical employability skill. Likewise, WRVC recognizes being present and showing up on time demonstrates commitment, reliability and responsibility. To celebrate students who are consistently showing up and giving their best, WRVC is excited to share the results of our second attendance raffle, recognizing strong attendance for the second quarter.

We entered over 150 names of students whose attendance has been at 95% or higher between November 3rd and January 9th into a raffle. Our winners for Tech I are: Shelby Easter from Criminal Justice, Brady Griffin from Business Education, and Marcus Katane from Automotive Technology. Our Tech II winners are Isiah Irish from Auto Tech, Landon Misiuk from Culinary Arts, and Isabell Stoll from Medical Occupations. Thank you for showing up and working hard!

The winners of this raffle each receive a coupon for a free drink from WRVC's Brew N Business Cafe! Congratulations! We will be having more raffles moving forward!

Ms. Lewis’ Medical Occupations students recently took a hands-on look into anatomy by dissecting a pig’s kidney as part of their Urinary System unit. This engaging lab allowed students to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world context while practicing essential medical skills such as precision with instruments, proper use of personal protective equipment, and careful attention to directions.
Through collaborative work with partners, students made detailed observations, documented their findings, and identified key kidney structures they have been studying. Seeing and handling the organ in person helped deepen their understanding of how the urinary system functions, while also reinforcing professionalism, teamwork, and technical skills that are critical in healthcare careers.

Students in the Medical Occupations program recently participated in a hands-on digestive system lab designed to demonstrate how efficiently the human body processes food. During the activity, students combined bread, a banana, and cashews in a zip-top bag to represent the stomach, adding orange juice to simulate digestive fluids. By kneading the mixture, they modeled both mechanical and chemical digestion.

Once the food was fully broken down, the contents were transferred into pantyhose to represent the large intestine. Students then removed as much liquid as possible to illustrate how the large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes. The driest result highlighted optimal large-intestine function.

This engaging lab helps students visualize how food moves through the digestive system while reinforcing key concepts about digestion and nutrient absorption—and it’s always a student favorite!

There will be a two hour delayed start of school today, Tuesday January 27. This will give crews, families, students, and staff extra time to finish clearing snow, especially what fell overnight. This means there is no Tech I session today.

It's never too early to think about coming to WRVC! This week we welcomed over three hundred 8th grade students into our programs! 8th graders got to visit 3-4 programs where our students, and some instructors, provided some hands on experiences! From using a miter saw in Building Trades and braiding hair in Cosmetology to using handcuffs in Criminal Justice and enjoying freshly made cookies in Culinary Arts, these prospective students got to see and DO a lot! Thank you to Mrs. O'Toole, our school counselor for coordinating with the middle schools to set up these visits. All of the 8th grade students in attendance were respectful and engaged, representing themselves and their schools in a positive way. Thank you to the students and staff at Westbrook and Bonny Eagle Middle Schools for helping to make these visits so successful! We hope many of these students become future students at WRVC!

These smiles say it all! Our pre-school students got to enjoy a favorite winter activity, SLEDDING! While much of our snow has melted, the students in our Heavy Equipment Operations program built a sledding hill for our pre-school students to use. Of course, the HEO students had to test the sledding hill for quality assurance - and it passed the test!

In Ms. Sherburne's Medical Occupations class, the students are gaining hands-on experience through engaging, real-world instruction. Today’s lesson focused on essential patient care skills, including how to properly inspect a G.I. tube and understand correct placement, the importance of performing oral care every two hours, and ensuring patients are upright after eating to promote safety and comfort.

Students also discussed the value of socialization in healthcare... supporting patients by accompanying them to the dining room and encouraging community interaction to help restore healthy eating habits. In addition, they are learning about colostomy bags and the care involved, building both technical skills and compassionate patient-centered awareness.
